Stamford
Stamford's proximity to New York allows those who live and work in the city ample opportunity to take advantage of the Big Apple’s cultural, retail, employment and other resources. The Stamford Transportation Center is located in Stamford's downtown business district, near I-95, which is Connecticut's interstate highway. Another major highway is Route 15, the Merritt Parkway, which crosses Stamford and merges into New York's Hutchinson River Parkway.

While Stamford is the fourth largest city in the state, it has managed to maintain its small-town feel. The city’s coastal location and vast amount of open park space are integral parts of the community and create an almost rural atmosphere. Major parks include Cove Island Park featuring the Terry Conners Ice Rink, Cummings Park & Cummings Park West/West Beach, Scalzi Park/Cubeta Stadium and the Jackie Robinson Park of Fame. Mianus River Park & Glen is a 185-acre conservation site featuring nature trails. Veteran's Memorial Park features a beautiful granite memorial honoring those who served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, memorial gardens, the Exchange Club Freedom Shrine and the Stamford Lincoln Statue.

Stamford’s public schools system has been recognized as one of only 10 school districts across the country to be named a model of exemplary education reform by the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future. Nearly 80% of all high school graduates pursue higher education. It is one of the first cities in the country, and the first in the State of Connecticut, to implement a School Readiness Program, that offers all four-year olds in our community the opportunity to receive a pre-kindergarten education.

When it comes to cultural activities, Stamford more than holds its own with its own. The Stamford Symphony Orchestra, Connecticut Grand Opera & Orchestra, American Ballet Theatre, The Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford Theater Works, Stamford Museum & Nature Center, Rich Forum and numerous community groups and organizations call the city home.

Stamford boasts an extraordinarily diverse economic base, and serves as the business center of Fairfield County. Many major U.S. companies have located their corporate headquarters in Stamford including General Electric Capital Corporation, Pitney Bowes, Clairol, Xerox Corporation, International Paper, Gartner Group, Omega Engineering, Cadbury Beverages, Circon/ACMI, General RE Corporation, Hyperion Software, and Diageo/United Distillers. Stamford is also home to UBS Warburg, a Swiss-based international investment bank.

The 37-square mile community lies within Fairfield County and borders Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien, and Pound Ridge, NY. Stamford features a low crime rate and holds a designation as one of the most livable cities in America. In the early part of the 20th Century, Stamford progressed from a factory hub to a research center, and in the last quarter of the century, to the country's third largest corporate headquarters community.

The city was founded in 1641 when 29 families left Wethersfield to settle along the Rippowam River on land purchased from Native Americans. On the first of July, 1640, Captain Turner of the New Haven colony signed a parchment which is considered to be the deed to Stamford. Signing for the native inhabitants was Chief Ponus. The purported cost of the transaction was 12 coats, 12 hoes, 12 hatchets, 12 glasses, 12 knives, four kettles and four fathoms of white wampum The city was originally known as Rippowam. It was later named after a town in Lincolnshire, England. Lincolnshire furnished more than eighty percent of the original settlers in New England and a greater number of old English names to New England towns and counties. In old English, Stamford means "stony ford."
